Bequest and gift; Caroline and Erwin Swann; 1974; (DLC/PP-1974:232.917) On April 24, 1916, members of the Irish nationalist movement, Sinn Fein to protest British rule in Ireland. Their effort was significantly aided by weapons and ammunition furnished by a sympathetic German government. The militants quickly seized key parts of Dublin, and their leaders declared a provisional government of the Irish republic. After six days they were forced to surrender to British authorities. Clubb's unsympathetic cartoon appeared on the day that the last of the revolutionaries surrendered to the British. Published in: The Rochester Herald, May 2, 1916.
