Bequest and gift; Caroline and Erwin Swann; 1974; (DLC/PP-1974:232.915) During the 1914 New York Democratic primary elections, a group of Democrats, fed up with the corrupt ways of Tammany Hall boss Charles Murphy, formed a ticket to run against Tammany's man, incumbent Governor Martin Glynn. The group was headed by former state Executive Auditor and newspaperman, John Hennessy and the then Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Hennessy ran as the gubernatorial candidate while Roosevelt sought a seat in the U.S. Senate. Clubb's cartoon was published two days after Hennessy and Roosevelt had announced their campaign against Tammany" in a New York City rally.
