Initial press reports confused the name of the attacked village with the refugee camp to which the survivors of the massacre were taken. Title inscribed below image. Bequest and gift; Caroline and Erwin Swann; 1974; (DLC/PP-1974:232.161) A massacre in the South Vietnamese village of My Lai occurred in March of 1968. Atrocities were not made public until later that year when an ex-soldier wrote to President Nixon and Congress, telling them of the massacre of innocent men, women, and children by American soldiers. Public outrage forced the United States.
