Inscribed in pen lower right: Used in Punch July 21/66. drawn by Walter Crane. No copyright information found with item. Signed, lower left: Egyptian styled monogram of a crane surmounting a letter W. Title inscribed in ink below image. Bequest and gift; Caroline and Erwin Swann; 1974; (DLC/PP-1974:232.129) This image is similar to a drawing published in Punch, which is said by Crane's biographer Spencer, to be the only one of the artist's drawings ever accepted by that magazine. Spencer, who also cites it as one of the artist's earliest works, claims that it was prepared from sketches made while on vacation in Paris with his brother Thomas, in February of 1866. The published caption which differs slightly reads, Great Show of Chignons. A Hint for the Hairdressers' Society." Similar version published in: Punch 1866."
