Harris & Ewing Studio
George Harris and Martha Ewing opened a photographic studio in Washington in 1905 and kept it running for forty years, and between them they photographed nearly everyone who mattered in American government across two world wars and a depression.
The partnership itself is worth noting. Ewing was a co-owner of a substantial commercial business at a time when that was rare, and the firm carried both names for its entire existence.
Glass plate remained the studio standard here long after film was practical, because a plate holds detail that film of the period could not and a portrait studio sold enlargements. It is the reason a Harris & Ewing negative can be blown up to poster size without falling apart.
The work divided into two halves. There was the studio portrait business — senators, cabinet officers, generals, ambassadors, judges, and the endless stream of people who came to Washington and needed a formal likeness. And there was the news operation, which covered hearings, inaugurations, arrivals, departures, ceremonies and disasters.
The portraits follow the conventions of their period and reward a second look because of it. Even lighting, a plain backdrop, the subject turned slightly, retouched to remove the years. What they record is not really a face but a person's official version of themselves, which for public figures is its own kind of document.
The studio also sold to the sitters. A senator wanted portraits for constituents, a general wanted them for the papers, and Harris & Ewing supplied both from the same session. That commercial arrangement is why the collection is comprehensive in a way a purely journalistic file would not be — the studio had a financial reason to photograph absolutely everyone who passed through Washington.
The news pictures are looser and often better. A cabinet officer caught mid-sentence on a set of steps, a crowd of reporters converging, the president's car with people running alongside it. Harris & Ewing supplied these to newspapers directly, in competition with the wire services, so speed mattered and polish did not.
The collection came to the Library of Congress in the 1950s and runs to roughly forty-two thousand glass negatives and film negatives. A great many were never published — studio outtakes, second exposures, and the frames a picture editor passed over, which is where the more human material tends to be.
The span is what gives the collection its weight. It opens with Theodore Roosevelt in office and closes at the end of the Second World War. The same studio, often the same lighting setup, photographed the men who argued about the Panama Canal and the men who ran the Manhattan Project. Laid out chronologically it is a slow, unblinking record of power changing hands.
Two cautions. Captions here are frequently just a surname, so identification is often incomplete, and many of the people named were minor figures whose names mean nothing now. And the studio work is heavily retouched — pencil on the negative to smooth a face was standard practice, so a Harris & Ewing portrait shows a subject as they wished to appear.
